In most Sharepoint deployments only a subset of existing documents gets imported to Sharepoint. Sometimes, for various reasons, there are still files that reside in network shares but need to be displayed in a document library.

You can mix contents from both Sharepoint document libraries and network shares by modifying the Link to Document content type. See here for more details.   Do you know another way of getting this functionality? If so please leave a comment and I'll update the page.
